Dear Sir/Madam,

It is understood from our members and also during our recent business delegation to Sudan that some of our banks in their effort to play safe are refraining from issuing Letters of Credit for export of Pharmaceutical to Sudan citing reasons of US sanctions. A representation to this effect has been made to our Joint Secretary, Department of Commerce by one of our member companies who has experienced the refusal of the bank issuing Letter of Credit.

In this regard, we wish to inform members that trading of Pharmaceuticals and Medical Equipment with Sudan are not subjected to US sanctions.

The above fact has been reconfirmed by our Ambassador in Sudan in a correspondence with Joint Secretary, Department of Commerce recently. The Ambassador has cited US Embassy's Charge 'd 'Affairs' reply to a Pharmaceutical company based in Khartoum, Sudan (copy enclosed), when the company has requested for a clarification on the matter.

We also wish to inform that Department of Commerce is taking up the matter with RBI and directing them to issue suitable clarification to all Indian Banks and continue helping the exporters in transactions of Pharmaceuticals to Sudan, as is done while transacting with any other country.

Members are therefore suggested to avail the export opportunities in Sudan by complying with their regulatory requirements.  Members may inform us  if there are any issues with banks or other agencies relating to finances etc.
